About me

I’ve had type one diabetes since age 12. It is 39 years this month as I start this blog, and I continue to live well, feel healthy, even grateful at times for the gifts that diabetes has brought me. And, I need a place to vent, to connect, to share my successes and frustrations. I’ve been reading others’s blogs and have loved the diabetes online community (DOC) for years, and now feel it’s time for me to jump in and share my perspective.

I am tired of feeling alone in this, even with the love and support of family and friends, and a great monthly support group, I continue to feel alone. I share too much of the details of diabetes with my partner, so I’m hoping this will give me another place to think out loud…

I love that having diabetes creates a community where we understand each other, with so many similarities and aspects we can share. I also feel different at times, not a “mainstream” person in many ways. I eat mostly organic, whole foods, pay close attention to nutrition and my health from a holistic perspective. My work is energy healing and spiritual counseling, and I believe practicing Reiki (a Japanese hands-on healing technique) for 15 years on myself and my clients  has helped me stay healthy with no complications. I turn first to herbs, homeopathy, essential oils and other natural modalities before stepping into allopathic medicine. I also believe in doing what works – a combination of everything. I believe I wouldn’t be alive without modern, western medicine and insulin, and I’m very grateful for that!

I love on Maui and Moloka’i, Hawai’i with my partner and work and write in the most beautiful places I can imagine. I am the mother of two daughters, my younger one about to graduate from college and fly into the next stage of her life, and my older one who flew into the spirit world in 2012, after having cancer, which I write about here
